Wise Owls
3-5 years
Welcome to Wise Owls, our wonderful Pre-school room. The transition from Swans to pre-school or into Nursery from home, will have been discussed with you and will be planned to ensure it is smooth and supportive. Each child will has a planned transition into the room to ensure we meet their individual needs, some will take longer than others; this will depend on your child’s previous experiences and resilience.
Our Room
Wise Owls is an open plan room, and offers continual provision to ensure that resources are freely accessible to enable the children to follow their interests and start ti manage their own learning. This helps to build their confidence and independence. In addition to free play, developmentally appropriate opportunities are planned in the moment, these are provided based on our observations and aim to build on children's individual needs and interests.
We introduce more structure to our activities to prepare the children for school. Small group time and co-operative play are encouraged throughout the day. Independence in self - care is promoted and children learn to self-serve food at meal times, they are encouraged to help to tidy away resources after they have finished playing this gives a sense of self-esteem, confidence and responsibility.
Practitioners carry out "In the moment planning" (IMP's) for each of their key children and record and track developmental steps and the impact of adult interactions. We use the same observation system in the Cygnets and Swans rooms, which enables our parents to be kept fully up to date with their child’s progress in all areas of the EYFS. Every 3 months development is shared and discussed with parents in a meeting, key workers complete an at home sheet with parents to track changes in the child's routine, development at home and to record any special achievements. we hope this sharing of information will encourage further parental involvement in their child's learning.
All members of staff in all rooms have undertaken additional training in supporting their specific age group. Regular in-house training and Manager assessments ensure all staff are fully supported and updated with current Early Years initiatives and expectations.
Our Expectations
Wise Owls are encouraged to share, take turns and be considerate and tolerant of others this supports implementation and understanding of British values. We expect Wise Owls to respect the environment and other children and they will be encouraged to be helpful, use their manners and learn to be fair when playing. Emotional resilience is a vital life long skill and ensures readiness to start school. We recognise the importance of empathy and self regulation and encourage children to apologise and recognise if they have hurt another individual. We encourage children to take considered risks, be positive and identify positive aspects in their own and others personalities and undertakings, make connections and solve problems both indoors and outdoors (Characteristics of effective learning). When children are resilient, they are braver, more curious, more adaptable, and more able to extend their reach into the world. The great news is that resilience is something that can be nurtured in all children giving them the best start in life.
Routine in our Wise Owls Room:
We follow a routine that follows the interest of the children, meets their needs and supports stability and confidence. We always plan for both indoor and outdoor learning to meet the EYFS outcomes and ensure we have time for singing, stories,
All of the children in Wise Owls room are allocated their own peg, where they can keep their personal belongings, in addition they have trays inside the room to keep any art work or personal items. Children are encouraged to put build independence by managing their own coats, clothes and shoes.
If your child is due to begin nursery in this room we would ask that you bring the following items:-
A few changes of clothes, including socks (preferably named), Wellies and a waterproof puddle suit or trousers (Named) Please provide clothes and shoes the children can manage independently, your key worker will happily discus this with you if you need advice.
We ask that if your child is still in nappies that you also bring a pack of nappies and you are actively promoting toilet training, please speak to key person for advice or support during this time.
The Curriculum
We follow a skill based curriculum which fosters social and emotional growth, problem solving and creativity and supports physical development, adaptability, resilience, and communication this creates engaged learners which makes them ready for life.
